Terms of use
Last updated October 5, 2026
Academic OS is software that runs on your own computer, free during early access. These terms explain what you are getting, what you are responsible for, and what we cannot promise. Using the website or the app means you accept them.
The software
Academic OS is provided free of charge during early access. The source code is published at github.com/Murun111/academic-os. It is licensed under the Business Source License 1.1: you may read, modify, and use it for personal and educational purposes; building a paid product or service on it requires a commercial license from the author; on the change date stated in the LICENSE file each version becomes MIT.
You may install and use the app on any computer you own or control. You may not misrepresent the app as your own work, remove notices from it, or use it to interfere with any school or third-party system.
No warranty
The website and the app are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, and non-infringement. We do not promise that the app is free of errors or that it will keep working with any particular school system, operating system, or third-party service.
Deadlines, grades, and advice
The app helps you keep track of things. It does not replace the official source for any of them.
- Deadlines are whatever you entered or whatever a synced calendar or Canvas reported. Always confirm application, financial aid, and exam dates with the institution or program itself. A missed deadline is not something we can fix.
- GPA figures are arithmetic on the grades and credit values in the app. Your school's official calculation may differ.
- Essay feedback is generated by an automated model on your computer. It is writing feedback, not admissions advice, and it can be wrong. You are the author of what you submit.
- Scholarship search results come from public websites. The app filters out offers that ask for fees, guarantee awards, or request a Social Security number, but it cannot verify any listing. Treat every result as a lead to check, and never pay to apply.
- FAFSA information in the app is a convenience. The authoritative source is studentaid.gov.
Nothing in the app or on this site is legal, financial, or professional advice.
Your data is yours, and so is its safekeeping
The app stores everything on your computer and we have no copy. You are responsible for backing up your data folder, for keeping any Canvas token or similar credential safe, and for what you choose to share from the app. If your computer is lost, wiped, or compromised, we cannot restore anything.
Third-party services
Some features connect your computer directly to services run by others: your school's Canvas server, calendar feeds you add, Hugging Face for model downloads, DuckDuckGo for web search, GitHub for downloads and update checks, and Ollama if you run it. Each has its own terms, which apply to your use of it. Academic OS is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any of them, nor by the Common Application, Federal Student Aid, Harvard University, or any school or scholarship program. Product and company names mentioned belong to their respective owners.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the authors and contributors of Academic OS are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, the website or the app, including lost data, missed deadlines, rejected applications, or decisions made on the basis of information shown in the app. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the software in the twelve months before the claim.
Changes
We may update these terms or the app at any time. The date at the top reflects the latest change, and the history is visible in the site's source repository. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
